What Safety lanyard do I need?

To simplified this question there are a few scenarios dictate what type of lanyard you need to use

Scenario 1

Fall restraint,  fall restraint lanyard used is designed to hold the person away from the edge preventing any risk of falling, there is a number of these types of products, fixed wedding, fixed rope, adjustable webbing and adjustable rope also there is a rope grab can also be used for this application

Scenario 2

Work positionings, with work positioning you use the lanyard as your third point of contact enabling you to use both hands, whilst leaning back in your harness, for this you need to use the lanyards in conjunction with a harness with a work positioning belt.

The lanyards that can be used for this with be lanyards with a rope grab, however you can use adjustable rope lanyards and fixed rope lanyard adjustable webbing lanyards and fix webbing lanyards.

Scenario 3

Rope access, rope access or abseil is used to access the sides of buildings using rope that is connected to the top of the building.  Rope access kits are available,. When using rope access you need a secondary line and a life and your main life line with descenders and ascenders to enable you to ascend and descend. 

Scenario 4

Full arrest, fall arrest is the last resort, and you must have a rescue plan in place. The lanyards used for fall arrest must have a shock absorber to take the shock out of the fall. It’s important to point out that these lanyards are not suitable if you’re working below 6 m.  In this situation you want to use a retractable lanyard. When you are working below 6 m you have to consider that you are 2 metres but lanyard is 2-m and also 2 metres.

When using fall arrest, you must have a rescue plan this is because if you have a fall, you only have 15-minutes to be rescued before you start suffering with toxic shock.
